We took our best-selling CE Series bus – created with input from drivers, mechanics, fleet operators and school administrators – and made the first plug-in hybrid school bus in the country. In addition to the already fuel efficient MaxxForce® diesel engine, the CE Series hybrid uses an induction electric motor, lithium ion batteries and power management software to improve fuel economy by up to 65%, and reduce greenhouse gases by up to 39%.
With the CE Series hybrid, you have a choice of two hybrid systems – charge sustaining or charge depleting (plug-in). Each captures energy from regenerative braking to recharge the batteries and improve brake life. The hybrid system is placed behind the transmission, and uses parallel system architecture to allow the bus to remain fully drivable with the hybrid system on or off. Even though the CE Series hybrid is completely state-of-the-art, its engine and transmission configuration are familiar to mechanics, keeping maintenance simple.
With the CE Series hybrid, as with all our school buses, student safety is paramount. Lighted controls for the entrance door, warning lights and other high-use items are conveniently located on the steering wheel. The increased height and width of the entrance door keep students more visible during entry and egress and the Leave No Student Behind® safety system helps make sure the bus is empty at the end of the day.
