IC Bus studied drivers at work, pinpointing their critical needs and regular actions to reduce the number of steps required in using dash controls and to create an intuitive system of steering wheel switches that is efficient, safe and easy.
The engineered ergonomics of an IC Bus don’t start and finish with the comfort of your chair. Through extensive research of 1,500 bus drivers, we have optimized the entire driver experience to create the safest, easiest-to-use work space on the market.
Take the position of the bus control switches, for example. IC Bus researchers utilized what we call a control reach curve—the reach area within which most drivers work—to arrange switches on the steering wheel in the most efficient places. The relocation of the door opener and flashers reduced the number of steps required from 17 to 12, optimized reach, and helped to distribute the controls between the left and right hands more logically.
Door open and close buttons, as well as eight lamp switches, are all accessible without the driver’s having to take his or her hands off the wheel. Every switch is visible in the dark, so drivers can keep their eyes on the road without distraction.
