For almost 30 years, school bus driver Vickie Smith left her home on the Yomba Indian Reservation to face the inclement weather and unreliable roads of the Yomba Route. This narrow gravel road is the only bus route serving the Gabbs School in central Nevada, carving its way through the desertscape of Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. Nye County is the largest geographic school district in the continental U.S., so long distances are a staple for Nye bus drivers.
When veteran driver Smith retired this past June, Nye County Director of Transportation Cameron McRae began looking for a replacement able to take on the Yomba’s many trials. His criteria? “Be very diligent in driving safely. Do not be in a hurry. Do not take any chances.”
