Today, a technician is a highly trained, tech-savvy, well-paid professional with job security few professions can match. Many technicians work with laptops as much as they do with their hands.

New technicians will find a challenging and rewarding career that requires problem-solving skills and technical prowess. Skills are often transferable to other fields, including high-level customer service positions at companies like International Trucks and IC Bus.

 

Job Security

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians is projected to grow 4 percent from 2018 to 2028. As the stock of heavy vehicles and mobile equipment continues to increase, more service technicians will be needed to maintain them.

In order to backfill for technicians who are reaching retirement age or leaving the industry, the TechForce Foundation estimates the U.S. needs to fill more than 25,000 positions every year between 2020 and 2022.

 

Pay  & Benefits

• It’s simple: The higher the demand, the higher the pay. Technicians earn a healthy wage right off the bat.
• On average, recent tech school graduates can earn $20/hr.
• Technical school students carry much less debt compared to students at a 4-year college.
• Tuition could be paid for (partially or in whole) by the dealership if the student commits to working there.
• Dealership may also provide tool purchase assistance (starting tool sets can cost $6,000).
  
  

Training

Technical training is offered in schools across the  country.  There are several options:

• A one-year program results in a training certificate.
• A two-year program results in an associate’s degree.
  
  

Grow your skills

Some dealers offer programs that allow you to work and go to school at the same time, which means valuable, real-world experience that going to school alone cannot provide.
